Still Awake

This is a breakdown
I’m making a note here: total loss
It’s hard to overstate my trepidation
Managers dictate
We do what they say so we get paid
Even though it ruins our health
We march on through the charade
Though there’s no sense staying up until you pass out
We just keep on saying it’ll make us stand out
Though the Science goes wrong
We keep lurching along
With the people who are still awake

I’m not even hungry
Or maybe I am, I can’t quite tell
Really don’t remember when I’d eaten
Through so many pizzas
And so many instant cups of ramen
When I’m home, perhaps I’ll grab
A naked salad or two
When the points of data form a blurry red line
I drink more caffeine so I can make it on time
And I know I’ll get burned
My physician gets concerned
When I’m spending so long still awake

Go away and leave me
I think I will have to stay inside
Maybe I’ll find something else to help me
Maybe more coffee
Like that would work; ha ha, fat chance
Anyway, this cake is great
From the convenience store
Look at me still typing all this data to key
When you look in here, I bet you’re glad you’re not me
I’ve experiments to run, there is research to be done
By the people who are still awake

And believe me, I am still awake
I’m doing Science and I’m still awake
I feel exhausted, but I’m still awake
Deadlines passing and I’m still awake
And when I’m fired I’ll be still awake
